Homework Problem for locating an earthquake

written by Ken Creager at the University of Washington

This homework problem involves picking teleseismic S times from a deep-focus earthquake, and writing an inerative least sqaures program in MATLAB (TM) to locate the earthquake. The student is then asked to use the resulting earthquake location to calculate observed travel times as a function of distance, and use these observations and the Herglotz Wiechert formalism to estimate the shear-wave velocity structure of the entire mantle.

You will need to download the MATLAB scripts from the coral package:The code can be obtained by anonymous ftp to: spike.geophys.washington.edu and is in the file called pub/out/coral_tar.Z To run coral you will need MATLAB and MATLAB's signal processing toolbox as well as FORTRAN and C compliers.

You will also need to down load the matlab files, and postscript files that describe the theory for locating an earthquake and show the seismograms. Click here to obtain compressed tar file containing these files. The theory and seismograms are also shown below.

I have a solution to this problem in the form of a matlab script which can be obtained upon request to kcc@geophys.washington.edu.
