April 7:  Read Yeats Introduction and Chapters 1-3 (up to page 39)

 Read the following web page by April 7: continental_drift.htm   and answer the questions at continental_drift_questions.htm .  Turn your answers in on Monday (April 7).

 April 9: Read the first three chapters (Preface, Historical Perspective, and Developing the Theory) of the following US Geological Survey pamphlet titled This Dynamic Earth by April 8.  Read each of the "side bars" pointed to by these pages.  The way this is organized on the web it is hard to print.  If you prefer to read this from a hard copy, I have black and white xerox copies in an envelope outside my office (ATG 222, one floor up from the seismology lab).  You may borrow this for up to an hour to make a copy.  Then please return it.  We will be reading the whole pamplet during the next week or two.

April 14:  Read This Dynamic Earth: Understanding Plate Motions (pages 30-46, see above link)  by April 14.

April 16:  Finish Reading This Dynamic Earth: by April 16.

April 21:  Read Yeats, Chapter 4 and answer these questions:  megathrust_questions.pdf by April 21.

April 30: Read Paper by Bucknam et al. on the Seattle Faul t and answer these questions by April 30.
Also read Chapter 6 in Yeats by May 2.  

May 2:  Read pages 2-1 to 2-9 of Prothro and Kelly: Chapter 2: Elements of a Science Investigation .

May 2:  Read sections on Observation, Interpretation and Figures in   Prothro and Kelly: Chapter 3: Anatomy of a Research Paper to help guide the paper you are writing, which is due on Monday, May 12.  (This date was changed because of the quiz is on May 9).

May 7: Read Yeats Chapter 7 (You should have read Chapter 5 by now as well).

May 9: Read Newspaper article by Berkland and paper by McNutt and answer questions in writing that will be the basis for discussion on Friday.  (The papers and questions will be handed out in class Wednesday.  Let me know if you can't make it to class so you can pick up them up before Friday).

May 23: By Friday May 23, go to the Odegaard Library A/V center and watch the NOVA movie "The Day the Earth Shook" which is on reserve there.  Answer these questions: quake_movie_questions and turn them in on Friday May 23.  The movie should be ready by Friday, May 16.

June 4: By Wednesday, June 4, go to the Odegaard Library A/V center and watch the NOVA movie "An Ounce of Prevention" which is on reserve there.   The movie should be ready by Friday, May 16.
