Mineral physics

The High Pressure Mineral Physics Laboratory studies the thermodynamic and transport properties of minerals, metals, and simple fluids at high pressures and temperatures. For example, we perform impulsive stimulated light scattering experiments on samples contained within diamond-anvil cells, from which we determine speeds of sound, thermal diffusivities, and equations of state. Our primary interest is in the characterization of materials under conditions that are appropriate for the study of the interiors of Earth and of other planetary bodies.
