SEMI-DETAILED ITINERARY:

March 21, Day 1 (Sat): Drive I-5 to Eugene, OR

Meet at Johnson Hall courtyard by 7:30am to organize gear, DEPARTING 8:00am.  We will have about 7 hours of driving on Day 1.  We will make a stop half-way at Canyon Creek, about 30-40 minutes East of I-5 to check out some rad Quaternary glacial deposits, sandwiched between recent volcanics!

Mar 22, Day 2 (Sun): Drive OR-58/US-97 to Klamath Falls, OR

Break camp at depart by 9:00 or 10:00am, as we will have only about 4 hours of driving on Day 2.  I am scrambling to figure out the details for this day, but there are bountiful geologic options in this area.

Mar 23, Day 3 (Mon): Klamath Falls, OR to Gerlach,NV; Explore the Playa

Another short-ish driving day, hopefully missing the snowy weekend on the roads we must use.  Set up shop in the desert!

Mar 24, Day 4 (Tues): Launch Rockets?; Recover Rockets?

Again, a free day in the playa and surrounding area.  Hopefully weather will permit some semblance of a rocket launch.

Mar 25, Day 5( Weds): Drive to Bend, camp at Tumalo St. Park

Leave perhaps around 8am to head for the Bend area.  This drive should be beautiful, and may call for stops along the way.  We will have about 9 hours of driving on Day 5.  The campground at Tumalo St. Park will have showers (if the water is running yet in March? I assume it will be).

Mar 26, Day 6 (Thurs): Hole-in-the-Ground, Fort Rk, Smith Rks, camp at Tumalo St. Park

A day of driving and exploring various features around Bend, OR.  An evening trip into town for dinner is certainly a possibility, but camp food is always cheaper.

Mar 27, Day 7 (Friday): Leave early for the Columbia Gorge via Rt. 97, hike up Beacon Rock if trail open, camp at Beacon Rock St. Park

Leave at 8am for a short-ish drive to the Gorge east of Mt. Hood (about 3.5 hours).  We may have to try a few places to find a campsite, as no campgrounds accept reservations this early in the year.  If we get there and settled early enough, a short hike up Beacon Rock is in order.

Mar 28, Day 8 (Sat): Hike Columbia Gorge, camp at Beacon Rock St. Park

There are many options for hikes in the Gorge, and we could possibly do 2 different group trips based on difficulty and interests.  Lots of landslides and basalt stratigraphy to look at, plus waterfallz.  ****Also, my mom lives nearby and will likely bring us fresh-baked goodies!!!!****

Mar 29, Day 9 (Sun): Quick stop early at Multnomah Falls, Back at UW

On our way back to UW, leaving whenever we like, we can stop at Multnomah Falls for 30-40 minutes and check out the views.  Only 3 hours of driving on Day 9.
