Preliminary:

On March 28, 2005, an earthquake with an estimated Magnitude of Mw = 8.7 occurred off the western coast of Sumatra at 1610 UTC. Information about tsunami generation and damage is at present preliminary.

It does not appear that a basin-wide tsunami was generated but local tsunami damage has been reported at Simeuleu Island near Aceh.
