Education :

Yale,   Undergrad,  double major in physics and geology, 1981
Caltech,   Ph.D.,  1987

Tectonic Background :

First, a score of years in California for grad school, working at UC Santa Cruz, the USGS in Menlo Park, and UCLA.

Finally, I escaped last summer to the verdant, tectonically-variegated, and understudied Northwest.

Recent Research :

I've worked on numerical simulations, earthquakes and Earth structure. My recent work includes measuring the damage to faults during earthquakes, questioning why there are earthquake swarms, measuring the rotation of the inner core, and showing there is a correlation, albeit very weak, between the occurrence of earthquakes and the ocean tides.

Current Projects (11/07)
:

Showing tremor is driven by sufficiently large surface waves (with Rubinstein, Gomberg, Bodin, Malone, and Creager).

Starting to image crust and upper mantle of Oregon and Washington with noise cross-correlation of EarthScope TA stations, maybe extending to map basin structure under Seattle (with Delorey, Pratt, Frankel).

Informally surveying southern California seismic noise from 0.1 to 10 Hz (with Cochran, Gomberg).

Continuing exploration of inner core scattering and rotation (Peng doing most of the work, with Koper).

Mapping the mechanical weakness around the Calico fault in the Mojave Desert (PI, but Cochran is leading this effort, with Shearer, Li, Fialko).

Upgrading PNSN (Bodin, Malone, entire PNSN staff).

Investigating undesired tilt pulses that appear on broadband sensors under moderate shaking (Bodin, Delorey, Steim, Busby).
