PRINCIPLES OF GLACIOLOGY

Field Trip - Saturday 30 September, 2000

Meeting Time: 7:15 am

Meeting Location:	parking lot west of Johnson Hall and north of ATG

Bring: lunch, hiking shoes, warm clothing, rain gear, sun glasses,
note book and pencil, energy for hiking!

Return: about 7:30 pm

We will drive in a van northward from the UW campus to Mt. Baker. Depending on the size of the group and weather, we will go either to the Coleman Glacier on the north side of the mountain, or Easton Glacier on the south side.

We will have a chance to see a glacier in action, characteristics of glacier ice, geomorphological and hydrological effects from glaciers, avalanche terrain and effects from ground freezing. It is possible for there to be fresh snow this time of year, so we may get to look at features of snow texture and metamorphism.

You can check the current weather prediction from the National Weather Service.

  • A writing assignment associated with the field trip is due Wednesday October 4.
