Geo-Club Elections!

The Geo Club is organized by and for undergraduate students in the Earth and Space Sciences Department. All UW students with an interest in geology are welcome to join.

This week the club will be electing the officers for next year. Those selected will be responsible for all club activities in 2007-2008, including fundraising for the anticipated trip to Hawaii, organizing the department Holiday Party, Bad Geo Movie Night.

There have usually been four or five officers each year.  The President is the club's liason to the department chair, and is responsible for major organizational tasks.  The Vice-President's job is to pick up the slack, if any.  The Secretary is responsible for notes and membership issues, including the mailing list (and perhaps this website).  The Treasurer handles financial transactions and receipts, especially purchases for field trips and supplies for events.  Each group of officers has found different ways to divide these resposibilities, and the job descriptions are only guidelines -- other positions have been created as necessary.

There are six candidates for office this year; they are listed below in alphabetical order.  Please read about them, and e-mail your choices to Geo-Club president Tara Smiley at tsmiley@u.washington.edu by next Wednesday, June 30!  You can choose any candidate for any office!
  • Eli Bloch (treasurer)
I'm interested in running for an office position next year.  I'd be happy to be involved in any way, but specifically I think I'd be useful as treasurer.  I've had a good deal of expeirience managing money for group activities over the past six years or so; that is, I've been playing with actively touring and recording music projects for quite a while and I've had to manage small budgets carefully throughout that time.  Thanks.

  • Suzanne Cruchon (vice-president or secretary)
Throughout the past year that I have been involved with GeoClub, I have witnessed much advancement and expansion.  This club provides a great foundation for undergraduate ESS students, and offers many activities, including the Spring Break Field trip.  The primary reason that I joined this specific club was so that I could enhance my undergraduate career; GeoClub has been a great resource for me, and I know that it benefits many other students, as well.
First and foremost, as a candidate for a position within GeoClub, I provide great enthusiasm and a desire to see continued growth of the club.  Over the past year of my membership, I have been very involved with and taken part in several actives.  My proficiency as an officer at many different organizations is extensive; some of the positions I have held in the past are President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and Sergeant at Arms.  I believe that these opportunities have provided me with the knowledge and skills required to handle a variety of situations, and the understanding to work with a wide range of people.
If chosen as an officer for GeoClub, I will provide the positive role needed to ensure that the organization continues to expand, and that it offers a multitude of learning experiences for all members.

  • Jessica Dake (treasurer)
My qualifications for treasurer:
-Treasurer of National Honor Society (Horizon High School, 2001-2003)
-President of National Honor Society (HHS, 2003-2004)
-Treasurer of Horizon Pride Regiment (marching band, HHS, 2001-2004)
-President of HPR band council (HHS, 2004)
-Treasurer(and trip planner/team captain)for Women's Lacrosse (HHS, 2002-2004)

  • Carley Freer (president or vice-president)
I would like to run for Geo Club President. I feel I am qualified for this position because I will have been in the club longer than most people after this year, I have already been on the Hawaii trip as you know, I will work hard and accomplish things I know need to be done, I will have enough time next year needed to devote to the club, and I feel like I can handle the  responsibilities.
  • Peter Neff (vice-president or secretary)
I do so very much want to be a GeoClub officer!
I'm mostly qualified for Vice President and Secretary because I'm very very enthusiastic about geology, and love to share my interest with newcomers to the field and with my peers.  There's no better way to get to know your classmates/colleagues than organizing trips out into our geologically amazing state, among others (Hawaii...).  As far as leadership experience, I was a student "leader" in high school student government and other clubs.... Mostly, I have lots of experience from the last year I've spent working with faculty and grad students in our department.  I work in the Isolab upstairs and am getting the feel for what "research" really means and entails!

  • Dyan Padagas (president)
What I'm running for:  I'd love to be a part of GeoClub next year.  I had such a good time this year, I know I want to be involved!  That said, I think the titles are not as important as the people -- I really hope for a good, strong team of officers to get things done no matter what their position.
My philosophy:  GeoClub is both a way to have tons of fun but also a way to network academically. I've made lots of new friends while at the same time integrating myself into the department. I'd really like to keep this theme running throughout next year.
Why I feel like I'd make a good officer:
    -super organized
-motivated to get the job done
-feel comfortable with talking to people
    -know lots of faculty
My expectations for next year:
-want more people to be in Geoclub -- the more the merrier!
-want lots of fund raising for a killer time in HI
-have a killer time in HI (oh yeah!)
More about me:
    -on the ESS Physics track
-want to go into planetary volcanology
-really into mountain biking but also like to longboard, snowboard, hike,
play frisbee, climb, and basically be outside...
PS- vote for me
