Both payloads flew on superpressure balloons, which provide altitude stability.
The first flight was launched from EsRange at Kiruna, Sweden. For this flight,
the BARREL instrument was a hitchhiker on the HiWIND project (PI: Qian Wu,
NCAR). The BARREL payload ran on batteries only, and collected data for a few
days and then shut down. The payload was recovered in Canada.
The second flight was out of McMurdo. The payload was lost when the
balloon unexpectedly burst at high altitude after a long flight.
