Halo CME -- 18 February 2000

The ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory recorded this image of a coronal mass ejection (CME). This is called a `halo', since the plasma bubble being ejected is directed towards the Earth. As it moves away from the sun, it appears as an expanding annulus, earning it the name.

The blue disk blocks out the Sun's bright light; the white circle near the center shows the true size of the Sun.
