Gerangan, East Java

Gerangan (pronounced ger-a-gan) is a small village located along a pocket beach that lies about four kilometers east of Popoh. Although nine homes were destroyed by the tsunami in Gerangan, all residents escaped injury by evacuating to higher ground after the second of three reported waves attacked the village. The third wave resulted in the highest runup according to eyewitnesses. Measured runup ranged between 4.6 to 5.5 meters above mean sea level.

Extensive tsunami-induced beach erosion occurred along the beach, resulting in the formation of a one-meter high scarp. The tsunami penetrated a coconut grove bordering the beach and inundated a large rice paddy. The maximum horizontal inundation distance was estimated to be over 500 meters from the mean water line.
