Week 6: Fluid dynamics II
Week 6: Fluid dynamics II
Overview:-
We continue with fluid dynamics, and study the cause of vertical temperature gradients in the atmosphere. Why is it so hot and sunny east of the Cascades? We then turn to the effects of rotation on the fluid motion. Why does large scale flow circle around a region of low pressure? Why are there easterly trade winds in the tropics and westerlies at midlatitudes?
Physical principles:-
1st law of thermodynamics; conservation of angular momentum; the Coriolis force; Geostrophic balance; the thermal wind; the Ekman layer;
